Cyril came to Cowes as a small boy when his father was the Royal Victoria Yacht Club secretary in Ryde. He joined the family wool broking firm of Windeler and Co. In 1931 as a member Cyril Windeler proposed a race around the Isle of Wight and presented the Club with a trophy the famous Gold Roman Challenge Bowl. It was not until the outbreak of World War II in 1939 that Major Windeler finally won his trophy, sailing his 7-ton auxiliary cutter Kaliste designed by Jack Giles. This trophy is still raced for in the Club's world-famous Round the Island Race to this day.
